This is an old story of a séance gone wrong told to me by my mother. These are her memories.

At the time that my friends and I decided to host the séance, I had just turned fifteen. We all had agreed upon having the séance on the 21st of May. Since we were all girls, we decided to have a sleepover at one of my friend’s house.

We planned accordingly. Leave our homes at five. Have dinner at Ashley’s (the girl who was hosting the slumber party) around eight. Around one, start pretending that we are asleep. Wait until just before three to get out of our sleeping bags, to make sure Ashley's mother was fast asleep, and at 3:33 in the morning, begin the séance.

While the séance was being hosted, strange occurrences happened. A china dish that was on a shelf flew across the room and smashed into thousands of tiny little pieces. We all stopped in case Ashley's mother woke up, but she didn’t because the house was four levels and the séance was taking place in the basement. Also, a distinct smell of cigar smoke filled the room, even though none of the members of Ashley's household smoked cigars. We stopped in fear of waking Ashley's parents if the noises got louder than a smashing china plate, but we all learned one thing that night—
