Ghost Stories

The Ouija Board

Personal Experience by Rebecca

“Hey Becca, can’t wait till your party tonight,” said Savannah.

“Me neither,” I replied.

When I got home, I cleaned and set out food for the party. The guests started arriving at 8:00. First was Savannah, then Kirsten, Skylar, Kayla, Jennifer, Taylor, Catie and last but not least was Valire.

We played cards and sang karaoke all night. Finally, around 2:00 am, we were all tired. Kirsten, Catie and Valire were already asleep.

“Let’s tell scary stories!” blurted out Taylor.

“I’m no good at it,” replied Kayla.

“So, it will still be -- ”

“I have a better idea,” I said, interrupting Taylor. I looked in the game closet. “Have ya’ll ever heard of a Ouija Board?” They all looked excited. I turned the lights off and lit three candles. We laid the board on the floor and sat in circle around it. We joined hands and chanted, “We summon someone from the light,” then released hands and put them on the planchette, which is the triangle piece that moves to the letters.

“Is someone here?” I whispered. Nothing happened. We waited. Two minute later, the planchette started to move. Slowly, it moved to yes. We were all stunned.

I looked at everyone and said, “If any of you are doing this, you better stop, because it’s not funny.”

Everyone shook their heads. We started to ask questions again. “What is your name?” The planchette moved to “S,” then stopped as if it were thinking. “A.” “R.” “A.” “H.”

“Wow, so her name is Sarah,” said Jennifer quietly.

“How old are you?” someone asked. The planchette moved to thirteen.

“What year were you born?”

“1.” “9.” “6.” “5.”

“What month?”

“S.” “E.” “P.” “T.” “E.” “M.” “B.” “E.” “R.”

”How did you die?” The planchette didn’t move. We repeated the question. I started to feel strange; something felt wrong. I blinked, and when I opened my eyes, it was dark and cold. I wasn’t sure where I was, but I could hear voices.

“Becca, Becca,” I could hear them calling to me. “Wake up.” I saw a light in the distance. As I walked towards it, the voices got quieter, until finally they were audible no more.

The spotlight was blindingly bright, and when I was in the center of it I had to close my eyes. When I opened them I found myself in a neighborhood. I walked around, trying to stay hidden in this strange place. The town seemed deserted and dead. It was so quiet, it made me nervous.

I turned the corner to see a girl standing in the middle of the road, blood dripping down her wrist. It looked like she had done it to herself. She screamed. It was so high pitched, it made my head hurt. She stopped and stared right at me. She just stared, saying nothing for what seemed like forever.

I could no longer stand the awkward silence, so I asked, “Are you Sarah?”

She didn’t answer.

“What do you want?”

“LIFE. I want my life back!” she yelled.

“What happened to you?” I hesitated to ask, for it was the same question that had gotten me here.

“Why...why me...” She stopped. “I had so much more to live for than you.” She gave me a disgusted look. “But now I can have my life again, and it’s all thanks to you and your friends.”

“Wh-what do you mean?” managed to slip from my lips.

“I mean: thanks and goodbye,” she said, then laughed. A tingling feeling spread across my body, and I felt faint. I fell to the ground. As I did, I watched the young girl disappear into thin air, leaving me alone in the deserted town.

I heard voices again.

“Becca, finally...you’re awake,” Jennifer said, relieved.

“What happened to you?” asked Taylor eagerly.

“Are you OK?” Kayla asked.

“We were so worried about you,” they all said.

“Let’s get you some fresh air,” suggested Skylar.

“Becca, you seem different -- what happened to you?” asked Savannah.

“Oh, nothing, I must have passed out from all the excitement or something,” a voice replied.

The voices became faint again as I sat on the ground in the small, silent, cold town. I would be here, alone for all eternity -- or until a group of naive teenagers learned of the cursed game called the Ouija board.
