Ghost Stories

The Freaky Scam

Personal Experience by Tony

I was only 13 when this happened to me.

I was living in Japan when one night, my mother decided to ask me to get two items for her. She dropped me off at Wal-Mart, and I walked into the store and kept walking for about half an hour because I couldn't find what I was looking for. After that half an hour, I realized that a creepy looking lady was following me the whole time. She was super skinny and had bloodshot eyes, her hair was all frizzled up, and to me she looked disturbed. I kept walking and I noticed that she was just randomly picking up items off of the shelves. After about ten minutes, I turned around and I asked her, “Excuse me, Ma'am, but could I help you with anything?"

She replied, "Oh it's really nothing. You just really look like my son that passed away ten years ago."

So I said, “Well, if that’s all, then I’ll be on my way now." I turned around and started walking again and I kept a constant look behind me; the weird lady kept picking random things off the shelves and continued following me. I finally found my two items and went to the cash register. The lady went in front of me and ALL of her items scanned—I thought that if she had anything else, her cart would have fallen on its side.

She told me, “Could you just give me a hug and say, ‘Goodbye, Mom’ just so I could rest in peace?" I did just that and then she left. After that, I got my two items checked out and the lady at the cash register said, "OK, that will be a total of $719.89 please."

I replied, "What in the world what are you talking about? I only bought these two items!"

"No, you bought all those other things as well," she said.

"WHAT? Those are her items!"

“But you just said, ‘Goodbye, Mom’ to her."

"NO, NO, NO, she is not my mother!"

I ran outside to try to find her and she was just leaving the driveway in her car. She threw everything in the trunk and I ran after her. I was thinking of jumping on the car when I was right next to it, but as soon as it pulled out on the street, I couldn't see it anymore. In my head, I heard her say, "Goodbye son, I love you always."

Well, they called my mom to come and the cops came to sort it all out. In the end, we had to pay ten dollars a month until it was sorted out. I could sometimes hear her whisper in my head, “Goodbye son, I love you," over and over again. But I couldn't tell anyone about that and I had to live with it.
