Ghost Stories

The Devil is Loose!

Personal Experience by Marisol

This story was told by my grandmother. She was young at the time.

Back in the old days in Sabinas, Mexico, people used to go to church every Sunday at 11:00 a.m., so mass would end a bit before 12:00 p.m. My grandmother believes that the devil is loose when it is either 12:00 a.m. or 12:00 p.m., so that’s why you always have to do the sign of the cross whenever the clock marks those hours.

One Sunday after mass when all the church members were outside greeting the Priest and each other, suddenly a lot of wind started to blow out in the street. The dogs nearby started howling, and other animals around were acting wild and scared at the same time. Suddenly, a very distinguished and handsome man all dressed in black riding a black horse appeared out of nowhere in front of the church. The man’s horse was neighing. The man’s look was evil and macabre at the same time. Everybody outside the church was frightened, as they saw this ghoulish man staring at every one with two red, gruesome eyes. For a few moments, everything was silent except his evil laugh. The people in the church, including the Priest, could not believe what they were seeing. This could not be real! The man on top of the horse mysteriously disappeared and left a very strong smell. The smell was asufre - the smell that the devil leaves after his presence.

After all this happened, the Priest said that this was a warning that something bad was going to happen. Surely, after a couple of days, a husband murdered his wife after catching her kissing and dancing with another man.
