Ghost Stories

The Boat That Rowed Itself

Personal Experience by Caitlyn

A few years ago, my family and I were having a family reunion at a nearby campsite. It was late at night and we had just had a dance. All the older folks were asleep, but my cousins and I were still awake. My oldest cousin, who at the time was 23, decided to start a big fire. Now, to get to the fire, you had to go through a bunch of trees, and beyond the trees was a fire pit benches, and a lake. We were all telling ghost stories, and someone decided that we should go and get some stuff for smores. Most of my cousins were scared, and we couldn't leave the fire unattended, so they all went with my oldest cousin. 3 of my other cousins stayed back with me.

While they were gone, we deiced to look around for a bit. We were looking at the lake and we heard some weird noise. We looked around, and sort of shook it off, because we thought it was maybe an animal. Then we heard it again. This time we thought it was our other cousins. We then went back to sit around the fire, because our other cousins were on their way back. After a few ghost stories and laughs, we decided to tell everyone else what we heard. They all swore up and down that it wasn't them that was making the noises; which was true, because you had to go all the way across camp to find the food house. So we were sort of shocked after that. Then, later on, some people had left and went to bed, and it was now just 5 of us. My oldest cousin, my 3 other cousins who were with me at the time we heard the noise, and me. We started discussing the noise we heard, and we all heard it again. Then one of my cousins fell pale. He was looking into the trees, and there were a pair of glowing whitish/yellow eyes. We all then freaked out and we heard the noise once more. This time is was coming from the lake.

So, brave as we were, we walked over to the lake and looked out. We were all shocked to see a row boat with a shadowy person in it. We tried to call out to them, and they wouldn't answer or move. After many times of calling to them, the boat finally started to move. I tried to yell even louder at it, but still no response. Then, to our surprise, it slowly dissolved or disintegrated into thin air. To this day, we're still not sure if this boat had any relation to the noise we heard. We did figure out though, that the eyes were just a raccoon. But that boat out on the lake was no raccoon.
