Ghost Stories

Screams from the Scanner

Personal Experience by Kitty

My name is Kitty, and I am a 27-year-old wife and mom with twin boys. My husband works as a security guard over at the paper mill.

On this one particular day, he had to work the late shift—12:00 AM to 8:00 AM—and I was home with our two boys, Dylan and Michael. He usually calls me on his cell phone to make sure everything is all right at home. When he called me at 12:30 AM, I was on the couch listening to the police scanner that my mom had given me for my birthday. He asked me how everything was and I told him everything was fine.

We continued to talk, but about 15 minutes into the conversation, I heard what sounded like a woman screaming. I asked my husband if he heard it and he did, then he asked me where it was coming from and I said, "It sounded like it was coming from the police scanner." We both heard the police talking about a car accident that happened on the highway, then it went quiet for a little bit.

Then, all of a sudden, we once again heard the woman screaming. I was getting scared and wanted to turn off the scanner all together, but my husband wanted me to leave it on a little bit longer to see if the police could pick it up, but nothing was said. He told me to hold on because he was going to call the police. While I was on hold, other weird things started happening. I was not only hearing the woman screaming, but I was hearing growling and someone was shouting, "Help Me!"

I was getting scared and I was still waiting for my husband to get back on the phone, but then I thought maybe someone was playing with a CB and it was coming over the scanner. I was really wrong on that part. My husband came back on—he had the police on the other end of the line and the dispatcher wanted to hear the voice. The police officer didn't just hear the woman screaming; he also heard the growling, someone shouting, "Help me!" and then we all heard, plain as day, someone saying, "Is that you Jean?"

We all went quiet for a short time. At that moment, the police officer on the other end was starting to get a little freaked out also, but he assured me they would determine the source of the screaming and get back to me. I questioned how they were going to be able to do all this from a voice over a scanner, but he got off the phone. I reached for the power button to turn off the scanner, but the screaming got louder.

I didn't know what to do. The police officer was off the phone now, but my husband was still on the line and he could hardly hear me as the screaming got louder. Finally, as quickly as it started, it stopped. Everything was back to normal on the scanner. The police officer called my husband back and told him that he couldn't explain it, that it was too weird for him also. The police officer told us that maybe we were being contacted from beyond the grave.

After that day, my husband didn't work the night shift anymore, he stayed home with me, and to this day, we still listen to the scanner, thinking that just maybe we might be contacted again. So turn your scanners on tonight, sit back and listen … and you just might hear the screams from beyond the grave.
