Middle Hall Mayhem

Personal Experience by Joeseph

In 1997, as a new nurse, I went to work at a local nursing home. The building was shaped like a large “T”. The top of the “T” represented the east and west wings; the bottom of the “T” was the north hall; and the middle, of course, was the middle hall.

Working the 11pm-7am shift with five aids, we kept busy. One night at about 3a.m., I was in a room with a patient who was quite ill and required close observation. Suddenly, directly above me, heavy foot falls began to traverse back and forth across the ceiling. This lasted for about 2 minutes. The attic over that room was only about 4 feet high. This room was located on the middle hall. It was a very chilling experience.

The nurse assistants began to report water faucets turning on by themselves. A few of the patients on that hall would tell me that something was in their room at night. This went on for almost a year. The last night I worked at this facility, I was walking down the hall, when I sensed someone behind me. I turned, expecting to find a co-worker. Nobody was there. I continued forward a few steps, when I heard a distinct, low pitched giggle. For the rest of the night, I did not go to that part of the building without taking someone with me! I was so glad that was my last night on the middle hall.
