Ghost Stories

Dennis' Ghostly Savior

Personal Experience by Dennis

Back in the ‘90's, I was one of the day shift cooks in a restaurant/pub in Newburyport, MA. I was working with a friend of mine, and I had to go downstairs to the pub area where one of the storage areas is located. (This area was part of the old Underground Railroad.) I was leaning over to pick up some cans of tomatoes, when I heard a voice say, “Dennis, be careful.” I looked behind me in this small, narrow corridor, but I saw no one. I thought my buddy up in the kitchen was having a bit of fun with me. So, when I went upstairs back to the kitchen, I asked him if he had been down in the pub area. He said. “No. I'm making soup.” At the time, I just shrugged it off and went back to work.

About a half hour later, I went outside to empty some trash. An old, wooden sign stood on its end right outside the door. All of a sudden, I heard a sound behind me, and the huge sign fell just brushing my hair and almost killed me! There was no wind, so I don’t know what made the sign fall over. I just thank God that I heard that sound and turned and moved enough to get out of the way.

About two months later, I was in a bar with some friends. A friend of mine - who was the bartender/manager - asked me to go upstairs with her to check the kitchen before closing up. The bar area connects to a bed and breakfast that’s not part of the restaurant/bar, but they do share a common entrance and are separated by a pair of glass doors. So, she locked the doors, and we went up to the kitchen and came back down to find the door on the right open. I had seen her lock this door, and she knew she locked the doors. She looked at me and asked me if I had left my keys downstairs, and I showed her that they were still clipped to my belt. (The people at the bed and breakfast do not have keys to that door.) She told me this has happened to her before, but she never told anyone about it. Since this building dates back to the early 1800's, we figure some of the lost souls are still trying to connect with us.
